CONVENTIONAL VAN SERVICE
|A long-distance household move is generally a move outside a 50-mile radius your home. The cost of a long-distance is based on an industry-established household goods tariff. Final costs are established based on three factors:
- Total weight of the goods
- Distance to be shipped
- Requested & Additional services
This is the method by which most long-distance household moves travel. We currently have at our disposal over 800 units on the road at any given time, ranging from 48' to 53' trailers. Each unit must adhere to United Van Lines strict safety and maintenance policy, must follow the "sanitization" program and cannot be more than 7 years old. The units must pass inspection three times a year in order to remain part of the service fleet.
Quality Service From Beginning To End
As there is usually more than one shipment on a conventional moving van, all long-distance shipments must be inventoried (listed and tagged) loaded and separated in safe secure manner. All our furniture vans are equipped with an air ride suspension that reduces road shock by 75% and oversize doors at the front, middle and rear of each unit for the purpose of accessing any shipment no matter the size.
Our Policy for Long Distance Moving:
All furniture items are wrapped and padded securely in your origin residence and only unpadded when the item is placed in your destination residence. All our soft quilted pads are "sanitized" (Another United Van Lines Exclusive Service which is free of charge) and manufactured specifically for long-distance relocations.
All upholstered items are wrapped in plastic before handling to prevent any possibility of soilage. Larger chesterfields and chairs are "bagged" in the same plastic bags that the original manufacture used when the item was new.
As "time" is not a factor in the final cost of a long-distance move, the Van Operator and long-distance crews take that extra moment to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible and that you receive the best possible service at both origin and destination (see VAN OPERATOR).
ESTABLISHING YOUR LONG-DISTANCE MOVING REQUIREMENTS
For all long-distance moves, it is necessary for a Moving Consultant to visit the home in order to determine the total estimated weight of the household goods and effects to be moved. It is, therefore, important that all items be accurately presented to the Consultant at the time of the survey in order that the final weight estimate is as close as possible to what the actual weight will be.
Your Moving Consultant may use one of two methods to estimate the weight of your household goods and personal effects:
- Cube Sheet Method. A "cube sheet" or table of measurements is a form that has been used in the moving industry for many years. The cube sheet lists almost every item of furniture found in a typical household along with the item's average cubic footage and/or weight. A section on the cube sheet is devoted to the total number, size and volume/weight of cartons that the estimator feels will accompany the furniture shipment.
- UNISCAN method. United Van Lines, always leaders in moving technology, has introduced the use of an innovative and more accurate method of determining the weight of a shipment, called the UNISCAN Estimating Computer. Using a bar-code laser scanning method, this hand-held scanner can list, on a room-by-room basis, the furniture and cartons by size, volume and/or weight that are to be shipped. Adjustments as to non-standard furniture size/weight can easily be made as well as notations of items not to be moved. You are then presented not only with your written estimate of the total cost of the move, but also with a printout of all your furniture items and related cartons that are included in the move. As with the cube sheet method, all items must be accurately presented to the Moving Consultant at the time of survey. Additions and deletions can be now be made with one simple phone call at any time after the initial estimate and revised estimate and printout will be sent to you..
COST OF A LONG-DISTANCE MOVE
Once the estimated weight of your move has been determined, your Moving Consultant will calculate the transportation cost based on the distance between the origin and destination cities, using the rate schedule in the Long Distance Tariff. In addition to the basic transport cost, which is calculated on a "hundred-pound"( CWT method), there are additional transportation costs which may apply to loading and/or unloading in major cities (also calculated on a CWT basis).
If the move is to the U.S., accessorial charges per CWT may apply if there is an elevator, stair carry, or long-carry involved in either the loading or unloading process. There is also an import/export surcharge, also based on total weight of the shipment.
The delivery spread is calculated based on the minimum and maximum time frames whereby a shipment is transported between origin and destination. A general rule of thumb is that the smaller the shipment, the longer the delivery spread; the larger the shipment, the quicker it is likely to arrive at destination. Your Moving Consultant can easily calculate the delivery spread of your shipment using United's Transit Time Guide (TTG).
Full replacement value transport protection (valuation) charges are usually applicable to all long-distance moves. The amount of valuation is calculated on a $.50 per CWT basis and the rate for full replacement value coverage is currently $.80 per $100 of total declared value. If you decide not to take the full replacement value transport protection, your shipment will travel at a maximum carrier's liability of $.60 per pound per item (very minimum coverage)
If you cannot take delivery within the scheduled delivery spread. Storage-in-transit can be arranged at a moments notice. Charges are calculated on the cost to bring the shipment into storage at origin, warehouse handling charges to receive and place the shipment into a secured storage area, and the charges for up to 60 days' storage. If the shipment is to be stored at destination, the warehouse handling and S.I.T. charges apply along with a local delivery charge (rather than a local pick-up charge at origin). The valuation charge for transport protection on the long-distance portion of the move also covers S.I.T. for up to 60 days. All S.I.T. charges will appear on the final Bill of Lading. If shipment requires more than 60 days' S.I.T., it will be treated as long-term-storage (LTS) and will be subject to the mover's local storage charges.
